PostSubject: Welcome to Devon Academy~!   Mon Jun 06, 2011 3:35 am

The campus was quiet and only several others were wandering about. Like some of them, Olive Zeveray had been having a lot of trouble sleeping and to rid her of her insomnia, she would take walks along campus until it was time for class. She never minded it; being alone. It was something she had grown used to many, many years ago and that was where she felt the most safe, the most secure. If she didn't allow anyone to get close to her, she would be safe. And to be honest, making friends and relationships never was one of her top priorities.

Olive tilted her head back and stared up at the gray sky. It would be another rainy day today. Whether it was due to nature or some student unable to control their power, she didn't know. In an hour classes would start. She jumped down from the tree branch she had perched on and began heading back to the dorms.

Devon Academy consisted of several stone buildings that looked as beautiful as they looked eerie, and were built like Gothic structures. There was the main building in the center that held all the classes and teacher offices, and to the right were the gymnasium and training area, and to the left were the boys' and girls' dormitories. Behind the main building were the cafeteria, where the students ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the rec hall was next to the cafeteria. The rec hall was where the academy held meetings, special events, and occasionally dances.

It wasn't a very terrible place to live in. The campus was beautiful with all the pine trees surrounding it, isolating Devon Academy from humanity itself. And by the cafeteria was a garden that some teachers and students tended to. It was the perfect place to have lunch; a place that was calming. Olive often went there to think or simply to relax.

As Olive headed up the stairs to her dorm room, on the third floor, she could hear distant voices as the students woke up and began to get ready. Unlike the human colleges, the dormitories at Devon Academy did not put roommates together. It could be too dangerous, and it was something the headmaster was not willing to risk. For that, Olive was grateful. Had she been stuck with a roommate, she wouldn't have known what to do with herself. Being around others was just so foreign to her, so awkward.

For the next hour, Olive would get ready. She showered and brushed her teeth, got dressed, and left her dorm just as it neared nine with her backpack slung over her shoulder. All the students had an hour for breakfast, and it was best to get there early because once the food is gone, it's gone.

As usual, Olive was one of the early ones. She supposed it was good that on some nights she was plagued with insomnia.

The cafeteria was a very large building with several very long rows of tables and chairs. Surprisingly enough, it could fit all the students. But if you were Olive, then you wouldn't want to be in there with all of them. It was always so loud and messy; it was something that annoyed Olive.

The cafeteria always had quite a variety of delicious food to pick from. It would fit any students appetite. After Olive got waffles with strawberries and orange juice, she headed outside for the garden area. There was only one other student out there, but he was listening to his iPod. He didn't notice her when she walked by and sat under the weeping willow tree. It was her favourite spot; it provided shade and concealed her, and a patch of roses had been planted right next to it so the air was scented with roses.

Olive pushed back her bangs and began cutting her waffles into pieces. She couldn't help but notice how her hands shook. Finding that her appetite had suddenly been snatched away, she sat back and drew her knees up to her chest. Her eyes stared up at the darkening sky and an involuntary chill ran down her spine.

She couldn't help but wonder what was in store for the mutants of Devon Academy.

((Btw,I feel like this thread is in an awkward place that noone will be able to find it, but I cannot figure out how to move it. Q.Q ))

Gwen stumbled along the stairwell, yawning until she reached the first stair and managed to fall down a whole flight of stairs, until she reached the second floor, much to all her fellow dorm member's amusement.

Her face flushing with embarrassment, she ruefully pushed herself off of the ground and collected her fallen books, shoving hair out of her face. Today it was uncooperative, and a murky ocean blue with raindrop-like sprinkles in it that wouldn't go away, no matter how hard she tried to dry her hair. I should have never gotten out of bed this morning. I knew today would be a horrible day. She sighed, and looked out of the nearby arched window, although even before she caught a glimpse of the outside, she knew what kind of day it would be.

Only on a rainy day would she manage to fall down a complete flight of stairs. Were it sunny, she would have been able to concentrate more, and be less lethargic, Sadly, that were not the case. As she exited her dorms, she felt a drop of rain and checked the thin bracelet-like watch around her left wrist.

6:38 am. Sounds like breakfasttime to me. As she followed the stone tile pathway to the dining hall, paying careful attention to not step on any cracks, she spotted a familiar face sitting next to the weeping willow tree. That guy. He's always sitting there with his iPod, I wonder if he has any friends.

Not like Gwen was one to talk. Despite being at Devon Academy for several weeks and becoming used to the new schedule her life had living in a private school for people like herself, she had yet to make a single friend, or even muster a conversation with a classmate. It was quite sad. She still missed all her old friends from her previous life, despite the fact they'd all thought of her differently after she started glowing and found out she was a mutant.

But also under the weeping willow was a new face she hadn't seen before, an orange-yellowed haired girl with a sad expression. Gwen stopped moving, just standing there and staring at the girl, until the other mirrored her stare. Realising how rude she'd been to stare, Gwen just flushed with embarrasment again, her face turning into a sparkly gradiant rose colour.

The gray clouds were swirling, churning and mixing together to form darker clouds. Olive watched the clouds with an intense stare that was kind of strange. There was something about those clouds that so captivated her. Perhaps it was the secret images they kept hidden in all their grey fluffy glory. She caught a glimpse of an agonized face and the next moment it was replaced by what looked like a rose.

Clouds. They’re so strange.

Olive suddenly felt a dire need to be up there with them. She wanted to blend in with them and be able to change her appearance whenever she pleased. By just a wind blowing, she could become something entirely different.

But instead, Olive is a mutant. A damn mutant. Some would say what she can do is a gift while others say it’s a curse and she should be killed; Only God should have power. She lost all of her friends because of her “sickness”—as her father called it. Her own father can’t even look at her and her mother pities her. The only child they have, and she is a mutant.

A disturbed feeling speared her. The clouds no longer held her interest because something else did. Rather, someone else.

It was that feeling you get when someone is watching you. That unnerving feeling that makes chills scatter down your spine; that feeling of being violated. Olive had no trouble finding the culprit; her eyes locked on theirs instantly and she just stared back. No emotion, no faltering—she didn’t even blink because the person who was staring at her was on the same floor as her in the dorms. She recognized her instantly; in fact, she had often wished to confront the girl with the hair that seemed to change every time she saw her. Olive had yet to know what made her hair change colour, but from the looks of it, her hair seemed to change colour with the time of day and the weather.

It was the first time in a long time Olive ever felt the need to befriend someone. She had gotten so used to having no friends—even no family—after the incidents back at her home in Alaska that the need to have a friend was foreign. It was terrifying.

Without realizing it had happened, the little area around the weeping willow tree was suddenly ice-cold and there was snow everywhere. She was being covered in snow and she began to shiver. Olive knew exactly where this place had come from. Back at her home in Alaska there was a park with a tree that she had always gone to, snowing or not. The scene vanished as quickly as it had come to life. The chill still lingered with her.

That was the thing about Olive. She could bring up any place she wanted and it would feel so real, though it was a mere illusion. She could create up a magical wonderland or bring up a scene of the Shakespearian times.

Olive shrank back against the tree, but she couldn’t stop her gaze from flitting back to the girl. ‘The girl with the rainbow hair’ was how she always thought of her. Could it be she had no friends?

((Am I the only one who can't see about half the forums/threads? >_>

Ah well. I'll just post here.))

Maredith trotted downstairs, hoping she'd make it in time for breakfast. She'd had weird dreams the previous night. Well, normal for her. She was petting bees, lots of bees. Some stung her, and it hurt like hell when they did, but most of the time their buzz was just annoying. She had this dream at least twice a week, for as long as she could remember. It was annoying sometimes, but she'd mostly gotten used to it.

She supposed it had something to do with everyone else's minds buzzing in hers. Like a cage full of bees, it provided a source of relentless, annoying-as-hell buzzing. Meredith hated it.

Ah well. She took an apple from the breakfast table and sat underneath a tree, munching on the apple and watching a few other people. She saw some klutz trip and fall, a few people with iPods. The usual. So boring and annoying.

She finished her apple and shut her eyes, waiting for the next class.

(( Maybe you're just going blind, Shilly. >_>
I am not. >:C I'm editing your post because I don't feel like making my own.))
Gwen walked over to the other girl and sat down next to her, hoping not to be too awkward.
"Horrible day, huh?"
She grinned, despite the rain putting a damper on her mood. She was determined not to let the weather affect her the way it had her entire life.
She yawned and stretched out, her feet falling out of the umbrella-like shade that the weeping willow provided from the rain. A few stray raindrops fell on her shoes, bright neon-green sneakers. The raindrops seemed to defy gravity once they touched her feet, moving around as if they were dancing.
She ignored the rain, and glanced at the girl's non-expression and how she wasn't responding to Gwen's attempt at conversation.
Gwen wasn't surprised, however. She was never good at making friends or conversation with others.
In order to alleviate the potential awkwardness she had just created, Gwen rushed into her bag and pulled out a small rectangular box. She held it out to Olive, it was colourful with a picture of an apple and various other fruits on it. "Juice box?"

Olive tilted her head to the left and raised her eyebrows when she saw Gwen walking over to her. That was strange. No one ever approached her. Perhaps it was the chill that emanated from her that kept others at bay, but it seemed like it wasn’t working this morning.

Probably due to the damn weather, Olive thought bitterly and glared up at the stormy sky. She instinctively inched away from Gwen when she sat down; it wasn’t anything against the other girl, it was just that Olive had major issues with being close to other people.

A loud boom of thunder crashing into each other rumbled above her head. She winced when it was followed by a blinding flash of lightning and glanced up at the swaying tresses of the willow tree.

“I always wonder when there is a storm, if it’s caused by nature or a mutant.” Olive murmured and pulled her gaze back to Gwen. She thought the other girl had said something, but she wasn’t sure if it had been her imagination. Or perhaps the thunder had been so loud that it had swallowed her voice.

Her attention was quickly taken by the rain dancing around Gwen’s feet. She leaned forward and watched it with fascination. She had never seen something as cool as that! Sure, she was in an academy with a bunch of mutants who could do some pretty cool tricks, but she had never seen something like that.

Olive’s face flushed when she realized how awkward it was just staring at someone’s feet. That was no way to make friends, but she could barely remember how that process even went. Did you simply say you were friends or did you ask?

Olive felt her face burn an even brighter red and blinked when Gwen offered her a juice box. Olive loved juice boxes—she personally thought they were one of the best creations man had ever made. But she couldn’t just take the juice box and not offer Gwen anything! That was just rude. (Or at least she thought it would be.)

Olive held up her finger to Gwen and dug around in her bag until she found what she was looking for.

In her hands she held a glass jar of pickles. She spun open the lid, stabbed a pickle with a fork, and held it out to Gwen.

“Pickle?” Olive asked and her smile was small, but it actually seemed to reach her eyes.

AnnaMollie...such a weird name for a girl, but it seemed to suite her. It was often her wish, however, to be named something beautiful and French but then her mind felt as if it would not have been as unique for a person like her. Her parents had always said she was special from the day she was born. It was never her knowledge though that she was as special as any of them had thought. It hadn't been until the first incident of the toaster blowing up one day when she got mad that it burn her waffle that she realized just how amazingly different she was from her parents, them being the only people she could compare to because the rest of her family was dead. No grandparents, no aunts nor uncles and most certainly no cousins. It would have been nice but everyone had either just plain disappeared or they had died off a while ago.

With so many thoughts plaguing her mind it was hard for the young one to not become depressed and be saddened. But, she refused to let such things other her. There were more important things to worry about, like trying to stay alive and well-hidden from the likes of shady medical facilities that wanted her tested and destroyed. And of course there was always schoolwork to worry about and that was next on the list of important things. Never was there the importance of making friends though, for she had never had any at any point in her life. Well, there was one but she had lost touch with the girl what seemed like a million years ago. She had, too, dropped off the face of the Earth.

"I wonder if I'll have the chance to make friends before I die."

It was often that she talked to herself, which made her seem ever-so-strange. Adjusting her glasses, she began to twirl her rainbow-streaks and hum happily as she skipped down the walkway on her way to the breakfast hall. She was rather hungry today and she had waffles on the brain; her favorite food. Her puffy rainbow tutu flopped along with her and her white platform heels clicked with her every motion. It was true that her style of dress attracted attention. Everything about her attracted much unwanted attention and even if she was in a place where everyone was far from normal, she still felt like the odd girl out. But, the way she saw it it was always going to be that way for her.

Once Anna got to the cafeteria, she tugged on her pink glove warmers and grabbed four waffles, one color of each fruit to make a rainbow and got a bottle of apple juice. Taking a muffin, she shoved it into her cupcake-shaped messenger bag then made her way out to the garden. She noticed others there but thought it best to not say a thing and sat under a tree. Biting into her waffle, she looked down at the food and sighed. Being alone was hard, but she would make the best of it like she had learned to do ever since leaving her parents. Just the thought of it made her sad, causing her to glow a blueish cyan color and her eyes eerily began to glow the same color.

Meredith opened her eyes and just stared up for a moment. She stood up and looked around the yard for a moment. Nothing had changed, except a couple other kids were talking to each other. Meredith wondered what they were talking about for a minute. Then she realized she didn't care.

Meredith got up, brushed herself off, and headed to class. She passed the talking people, and noted that their minds were buzzing excitedly, but shyly. She supposed that they were just getting to be friends, still not quite sure how to talk to each other.

Meredith sighed. That awkward first stage when you're like two blocks of ice to each other, not giving anything away, not being warm and friendly. One of the reasons Meredith stayed away from friendships.

Of course, it would be nice.

Ah well. She sighed again, glanced back at the girls who were a couple yards away by now, and continued walking to her next class.

Gwen stared up at the sky and where the lightning had just struck. "Damn this weather.." she sighed, and the tips of her hair slowly turned into a shade of yellow that had been seen in the lightning.
The small, green circular jar caught her attention. A pickle jar? I should really get some of those in my room. Her thoughts were loud in her head, and she couldn't help but grin at this girl who carried around a pickle jar in her bag.
"Why, I would love one." She grinned and picked one out of the jar, and ate it as loud as she possibly could, then burst into laughter for no good reason, her skin tinting a bright orange/pink, similar to a sunset.
As she picked up a second pickle out of the jar, she looked at the other girl. "By the by, I'm Gwendolyn Harrison. Nice t'meet ya." Her face widened into a grin, and she held out her hand that held the new pickle, waiting for the other to shake it.

((Gwen was talking to Olive. o3o XD Bahahha.))

For a few moments, Olive just stared at Gwen as she ate the pickle as loudly as possible. Without meaning to, Olive giggled and then she too ate her pickle as loud as possible, as she always did. After all, the louder it is, the better, right?

And then something really strange happened. It wasn't the way Gwens skin turned colours when she was laughing, but it was how Olive was laughing too. She was laughing so much her stomach hurt and when her laughter finally died down, she flopped onto her back and sighed blissfully. She had forgotten how it felt to laugh and even though she wouldn't admit it to herself, she had missed that feeling of carelessness. She had missed how all the darkness in life seemed to melt away when laughter took over and painted everything in bright colours.

And for that moment right then, lying on the hill under the willow tree, it seemed like everything did melt away.

It would be nice if this could last forever, Olive thought. She could feel the threatening fingers of sorrow reaching towards her, but she wouldn't let them get her.

"I'm Olive Zeveray." Olive heard the words leave her lips, but she was certain she hadn't said them in that cheery tone. That just wasn't like her. Even so, she knew she had said it. She sat up quickly and looked at the girl named Meredith. There was a slight moment of confusion between the three; the longer they sat in silence, the more uncomfortable that silence became. Olive thought she looked kind of like how Olive felt: awkward.

"Would you like a pickle?" Olive asked Meredith with a tilt of her head. It definitely wasn't like her to be this socialable, but if she fled her favourite spot, she would look like a coward.

And it really wasn't that bad.

Storms do strange things to people.

Eileen sat up slightly angry at her inability to stay asleep for the entire day. "i hate classes" she thought as she got dressed and brushed her teeth. sighing she stepped out of her dorm and looked at her watch. "seven thirty...damn i havent even missed my first class" she said aloud quietly while walking down the hallway. she looked at the random people she saw while walking and decided to keep her head down so nobody would talk to her. she quickly slipped into loomis claws class. "maybe loomis will let me stay in here for a few periods..." she whispered as she sat on a counter and waited for loomis to arrive in his classroom.

Gwen stared at Meridith also as Olive spoke to her.
She started waving one in Meridith's direction. "You know you want one, they're deliciouuuuuuus~!"
She grinned at Meridith and pulled out a six-pack of juice boxes and tossed Meridith one. "And you know what makes pickles even better? Juice boxes, of course! This rain sucks, and juice boxes make everything better."

Anna looked over at the loud and jolly laughter and gave a sudden smile. Her eyes blinked and suddenly reverted back to a normal state. Her aura seemed to slowly die down to a calmed and most tranquil state. As she looked on though, her heart filled with joy. She had not laughed so hardly before but wished she knew how it felt.

I wonder if it's nice to have a friend. Anna smiled to herself. Finishing up her food though, she decided not to dwell on it. There was much more to think of at the moment. And after finishing up her breakfast, she iced her hands and melted the ice, cleaning the sticky fruit juices and syrup from her hands. Her powers came in handy in moments like these when she was too lazy to get up and go all the way to the bathrooms to wash off her fingers.

Getting up, Anna decided that she was going to do the unthinkable and go over to say hello. It wouldn't hurt to just give a simple wave and introduce herself. The rainbow girl seemed friendly enough! So, what was the harm in saying hi to her, as well as the other girls that were present as well. The most she hoped for was that they too did not run away at the very sight of her.

"Um...hi there," she said as she approached the girls, stopping a few feet away from them. Her head down and her voice timid, Anna never made eye contact.

Her aura begin to radiate around her, switching from a light red to a yellow-green color. Her eyes following their color of course. Anna was always an emotional wreck and she could never control her emotions which in turn made her aura burst from her like rays from the sun.

Loomis Claw whistled under his breath as he walked to his classroom, his heels clicking on the linoleum floor. His fingers tapped a beat on his cane and he began to spin it inbetween his fingers as he strolled down the hallway, his other hand stuffed in his frock coats pocket.
Loomis taught the students how to develop and use their powers; On rainy days, he taught his class in the classroom while on sunny days he brought them to the Training Area by the Gymnasium and trained them there. Most of his students immediately adapted to using their power instead of ignoring it as they had had to do before coming to the academy. But there were the few students that didn't quite get it or simply couldn't keep a strong enough control over their power. Those students he worked the most with.
As Loomis neared his classroom, he shook his head and chuckled under his breath. She was there again. He had been the one to find and bring Eileen Winters to Devon Academy just a few months ago and while he did feel protective over her--like a father would--as a teacher, he had an obligation to make sure she got to class.
"You're here early," Loomis said as he sauntered inside his classroom, still spinning his cane in circles. He glanced at Eileen seated on his counter and chuckled again. She looked a bit grumpy this morning, which was no surprise considering she never really was up this early.
"So what can I do for you?" He asked as he flopped into his chair, propped his ankles up on his desk, and steepled his fingers together. He tilted his head to the side, already knowing what she wanted and why she was there, and a cheshire grin spread from ear to ear on his face.

Olive glanced up as a third girl approached and timidly said hello to them.
Olive narrowed her eyes and stared at the ground, her hands clenching slightly around the jar of pickles. What was going on? Was this little circle of theirs radiating friendship? There was no way she could take living like this. It was so different and she felt so awkward, so uncomfortable. The sudden need for isolation was so painful that Olive gasped and quickly clapped a hand over her mouth to keep from making any other noise that would give her away. The other girls seemed so engulfed with what was going on over there, she could only hope no one was paying attention to her.
Thankfully, the need passed as quickly as its attack had come and her fingers relaxed against the jar of pickles. She leaned her back against the tree and began to nibble on another pickle. Her appetite seemed to have fled her.
"I guess everyone wants pickles this morning," she murmured to herself and sighed softly. Her eyes passed over Gwen, then over Meredith, and finally rested on the new girl. Her head was still bowed, but all around her a yellow-green colour was radiating.
"Hey." Olive held out the jar of pickles to her and nodded slightly, a ghost of a smile playing on her lips.

Meredith just looks at them, looking comically confused. It's as if someone had just asked her to dip the pickles in the juice and then throw them at random people. She smiled a bit, thinking that that would be pretty damn funny. But then she just looked at the two other girls. "Pickles and juice ... ?"

"Pickles make the best breakfast, y'know? Especially on a horrible day like today." She took three crunches out of her pickle followed by a sip of the juice box. She slowly leaned against the tree and sighed. "I don't wanna go to classes today. All this rain is dragging me down. I'd rather stay in my room and play Mario Kart."
Her eyes brightened for a second as she thought of how much fun she used to have in that game, with her old friends before she moved. Gwen suddenly noticed the new girl that had joined them, and said hello, which was odd here.
It was funny, actually. This place was created as a house where mutants could live together and feel like they were part of a group. But so far, all she had noticed is how most of the students there were uncomfortable meeting other students and interacting.
But Gwen was different, she didn't like being isolated. Her goal was to make friends and make these fellow mutants feel welcome. "Well, hi there!" She said with her friendliest greeting, trying to not sound genuine. "Care for a juice box? I got plenty of them." She held one in her hand and waited for Anna to take it.

Loomis raised an eyebrow and sat forward, resting his elbows on his knees and his chin against his knuckles. "What kind of teacher would I be if I let you skip your classes?" He asked, voice and face completely serious. Although his rules weren't very strict, he took his job very seriously and he could be strict when needed.

Everything going on around Olive was a dull roar in her ears. It almost felt like she was back home in Alaska eating lunch with her friends. Before everything spiraled down and crashed her world into a million pieces. But drawing up those memories only brought upon a pain and longing that was so crippling that for the longest time, Olive had believed she wouldn't survive. It was quite a surprise to her when she survived those horrible moments.

Slight tremors began to shake her hands as she was threatened with those memories. Her jaw clenched, she pushed them to the very deep dark depths of her mind. The voices around her came to life slowly, although she didn't know what they were talking about.

What to do now? She wondered, her eyes scanning her surroundings. Not many students were out this morning due to the storm, but Olive didn't mind getting wet. She enjoyed being in the rain. Could she really handle staying here with these new people until classes started? It was so different than what she was used to.

"I wonder when it will stop raining," Olive mused aloud to herself. Her fingers drummed a beat on the lid of the pickle jar and then she stood up, stretching her arms up above her head with her fingers laced together and yawned. She didn't ask if anyone wanted to walk with her to class; if they wanted to, they would. She simply needed to leave--perhaps just to get away from this.

Meredith just stood there, not quite sure of what was happening. She wasn't quite sure of why the other girl was leaving. She wasn't sure why she'd said hello, either. Meredith, not knowing what else to do, just turned around and left without any goodbyes.

Gwen stared back at Olive as she left. She looked over at Meridith with a look of confusion on her face. Hmmmm. That girl needs some mental reassurance. she sighed as her once happy-pink skin faded into a faint blue that matched the rain outside. Her hair that was once floating around her looked dull and limp. She sighed to herself. What was wrong with all these people here? It was something more than they had a hard time making friends. It was more like they didn't want friends. Well, fine by me. Gwen suddenly became infuriatingly angry at nothing in particular and kicked over the pickle jar before going on her way.

Meredith felt a bit bad about leaving the other girl behind, but what was she supposed to do? She could feel the girl's anger flaring up, just like a bee. She thought of people as bees now. Always so annoying, and all that buzzing in her head.

Ah well. She shoud be getting to class anyways. She started jogging towards the building, hoping she wouldn't be late.

Anna took the juice box happily. She loved juice boxes with the passion of a five-year-old. It was like a lollipop to her or something. There was never a time where she had denied one...except if it had been grape. Anna passionately hated grape flavor. It made her hair stand on ends...literally.
"Thank you for the juice box," she said happily, her aura glowing a happy pink hue.
But it wasn't until the fact that Meredith and Gwen and Olive walked away that her whole demeanor changed. She too began to radiate a blue, saddened hue all over, just like before. It wasn't often that she could say hello and stay a while to talk to others and just when she thought that she had made a few faces to talk to, there they went; gone.
Something briliant crossed her mind though that she had never thought to do. Anna was feeling rather bold today as well so it fueled her braver. So, she picked one of the girls and followed them; Gwen.
"Hey! Wait please!" she yelled after the girl. Scurrying after her, her aura now flaring back to a bright and most confident hot pink, she made her way behind Gwen and fell into the girl's footsteps. "Please don't be upset."
